The Question of Funding
collective founded in 2019
documenta 15 - 2022
What is the question of funding? What culture does the donor economy create? How did neoliberal models of funding impact the structures of cultural production? How does culture represent political power structures? Does it resist it? How did cultural producers turn into employees within these structures? How can we politicize the relation between the individual and the institution? What did we do together? What grassroots models of funding exist in society? How do we rethink our definition of funding? How do we reclaim funding as a communal practice? How does collectivity create multitude? How to work together? Does being dependent on the community make one independent? How to think through practices of interdependency? Are we in a position to deconstruct the meaning of "culture"? How do we think through the relation between economic models and cultural practices? What did our collective do in the context of documenta fifteen? How did we practice the Lumbung? How can we become hosts when we are also guests? How do we harvest the questions, stories, and ideas that emerge from within us? What did we learn from a collective from Gaza? Whose stories are we telling and to whom? Is funding just about money? How can Dayra allow us to make use of existing local resources? What can be the role of technology in reimagining the economy? How do we create a supplementary economy? Can we think of communal debt as a local resource? Is there such a thing as unconditional funding? Can we work without funding? What do we learn from existing models of collectivity and artistic work? What contributed to our learning process? Who are our interlocutors? How do we nurture the trust circles in our community? What kind of dialogic spaces can we create? Whose discourse does culture claim to speak for? How have others engaged with our work? In what way can we build on questions related to funding in the context of communal cultural practices?
